Ready for the run in this cool and crisp November morning.
"I believe
that Taekwon-Do has greatly improved my self-confidence,
self-control, humility, and my integrity. It has had a profound
effect on my ability to work under stress; homework and other
tasks do not seem like an impending doom upon me, but they merely seem
like just another task that needs finishing. Furthermore, being on the
Leadership Team has greatly improved my skills as a leader. Finally,
Taekwon-Do training has greatly helped me improve my physical fitness
and in turn, it has helped me adopt a better lifetyle." - Kevin
L.

"The most valuable
things I have learned are self-defence, to persevere and not give
up, to keep a positive attitude, and that if I set a goal, to stay
focused on it until I achieve it." - Armaan T.

Black Belt candidates successfully complete the gruelling
physical conditioning test.
"There are many things that I like
about Black Belt Excellence. The thing that I enjoy the most is the
discipline that the instructors have when they teach you and encourage
you as you are doing the best you can. I also like the friendly
environment which makes you feel open to others and more
self-confident. Lastly, I enjoy the opportunity to have fun as a
great big family that kicks together and that sticks together!" -

Gotta have a "throw leaves in the air" shot!
"Performing Martial Arts is a constant challenge for body and
mind, I need to constantly remind myself of my abilities, and the
sentence 'I can do it - I will do it' applies to adults in the
same manner it applies to kids and beginners in this sport." - Stefan

"I enjoy being with the people here. I
don’t think that I would be where I am now without the people; not
only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. This is probably
one of the major reasons why BBX is so successful. The people at
our academy are all so friendly and we all get along so well.
Sometimes I honestly feel like we’re just one huge, extended family."
- Imane O.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test_%20(070).JPG)
The focus. The discipline. The gracefulness of
patterns.
"The thing
I enjoy most about training at BBX is the atmosphere in the academy.
Everybody is so friendly, happy, nice and encouraging yet they can
be so serious when they need to be during training. We all forget
about what happened that day and just focus on Taekwon-Do. We are all
'present' as Mr. Nguyen would say." - Caelen C.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test_%20(072).JPG)
100's of beautiful Taekwon-Do techniques performed.
"I really think that Taekwon-Do
has helped me become a more dedicated and more focused person.
Also, above all else, I learned to persevere no matter how bleak
the situation may seem." - Marko S.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test_%20(076).JPG)
Powerful patterns in full effect.
"Through
training here at BBX I have grown so much, both physically and
mentally. I have achieved a higher self-confidence, higher fitness,
good moral values and many other great benefits." - Sam J.

"I enjoy the
atmosphere the most. It is a fun, supportive, family-oriented
atmosphere that seems to attract friendly positive people that are
genuinely interested in overall TKD experience of mind, body, and
spirit. I enjoy my interactions with the other parents of TKD that I
have come to know." - Fred C.

benefits of living an active lifestyle. I have learned

need to." - Ben K.

respect others and truly believe in building a peaceful community."

"Through learning
Taekwon-Do I have learned discipline, self-control, and so many other
life skills. I have made many friends, and strengthened current
friendships. I can honestly say that I don’t know where I would be
without Taekwon-Do. Taekwon-Do has really become a way of life for me."

"I have
learned that everybody needs a balance in life. It is important to
take time for yourself, get some exercise and get away from 'things'
for a while. At the proverbial end of the road, not many people
have ever said 'Wow, the years have flown by so quickl, I wish I had
spent more time at the office' After eight years and counting, I am
happy to be able to say 'Wow, the years have gone by quickly, I’m glad
I started Taekwon-Do with my kids when I did!" - Bob J.

"My goal is to
continue teaching and training with my children. I would like to keep
training for as long as my body can handle the activity. I love
being able to train and maintain my fitness within the atmosphere of
my Taekwon-Do family. If I am able to achieve my 4th degree
Black Belt one day, that would be wonderful!" - Deanne D.

A most innovative and humourous mirror-image family team
pattern.
"My
proudest moments always involve my boys. For example, when Ryan
performs one of his amazing flying-side piercing kicks or when Dylan
finished his 3.2 km run in the pouring rain! I feel proud of
myself when others tell me what a fine job I have done raising the
boys." - Kirsten J.

"Through my Taekwon-Do training, I have
gained athletic benefits, including all of the physical performance
factors in the Training Cycle of Taekwon-Do (flexibility, power,
endurance, strength, and speed) and mental benefits, including all
of the Tenets of Taekwon-Do (courtesy, integrity, perseverance,
self-control, and indomitable spirit). I have also learned that
some of these benefits can be used outside of the dojang, like at home
and at school. Though I am still working on discovering my own full
potential, as Taekwon-Do is not just the end of the journey, but
rather the beginning of the journey." - Ryan M.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test_%20(145).JPG)
Yea, I did it!
I like the
fact that I get a good workout while doing Taekwon-do (smiling,
sweating, and learning). Excellent for coordination and balance. I
just love to kick! It's also fantastic to train with others of
similar age, especially with the other women of Taekwon-D. Its a real
treat to work and train with the young women of Taekwon-Do. Their
smiling faces, optimism and energy always pick me up. - Nelly D.

Thanking our loved ones who have helped us along the way.
"One of
the most valuable things that I’ve learned is how to confidently
defend myself. I’ve also learned many leadership skills from going
to the leaderships retreats and being on the leadership team." -
Patrick J.

Congratulations Black Belts - You are truly awesome!
"I've gained self confidence,
organization, strength, courage, inspiration, concentration and so
much more. I've learned to set goals for myself, was able to
accomplish them and by doing this I gained courage within myself.
Everything I've gained from Taekwon-Do has helped made me who I am and
I feel like I can accomplish anything, not just in Taekwon-Do
but also the obstacles that I meet outside of Taekwon-Do. So thank
you Black Belt Excellence for being a part of who I am." - Sara Z.

Demonstration, which was legendary, performing 2,500 kicks for charity,
raising $25,000 for charity, and doing 250,000 Acts of Kindness.
It has been a very challenging journey of project management,
fundraising, promoting, practicing, planning and preparing, organizing,

Congratulations on a perfect 25th
Anniversary!
It was wonderful to see so much pride and
team effort all day. From the food
tent, everything went so well and the long
line ups for the BBQ went fast. I had a few
people ask if the meat was 100% and I said
'yes'. I was also asked after where the
meat came from as others were so impressed.
Even I was surprised to discover the meat
came from a student that owns the Manotick
Village Butcher - that's impressive!
Thank you for the invite as I enjoyed being

January 28, 2011 - Journée pédagogique = Journée de Taekwon-Do
On
this cool and snowy winter day, it was a beautiful day at our our Black
Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy located in Kanata (Ottawa) as
children 4-11 from our local-area French Schools attended our bilingual
PD Day = Taekwon-Do Day event.
The energy was high from the get-go at 8:30am and did not subside until
4:30pm as parents picked up their tired kids ready for a great winter
weekend ahead. In between, we trained Taekwon-Do for over 3
hours with dynamic kicking and punching drills, self-defence training,
flying side kicks and even board-breaking. We also had fun playing
games, watching kids' martial arts DVD movies, doing obstacle courses,
and building (and then destroying) a "Tower of Taekwon-Do".
.jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg)
The Taekwon-Do Day was not only a fantastic day for the kids, but a
great introduction to the martial arts for many of the participants, who
will go on to join our Taekwon-Do Summer Camps or even Little Dragons
and Junior Achievers and Family Training programs.
.jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg)
Congratulations to all families who participated in this bilingual
event, we look forward to seeing you at the next PD Day. Thank you
also to all the participating local-area French schools who supported
this special day at our academy.
"It was a win-win situation for everybody
and BBX is pleased and proud to continue to offer bilingual Journées
pédagogique = Journées de Taekwon-Do, 'en français, bien sûr!'"

January 20, 2011 - Taekwon-Do Health and Wellness Write-Up in
Kanata EMC and Student Success Story
The following article appeard in this week's edition of the Kanata EMC,
which covered last week's Health and Wellness Show.
or on the image below to enlarge:

The story behind the story: Mikaeel board-break attempt was not
successful during our Taekwon-Do Demo #2 of the day, much to his dismay
and disappointment. So, during the two-hour break until our
next demo, he kept on practicing his kicks on one of our shields, with
the help of Mr. Bob Jardine, Assistant Instructor on our Leadership
Team. This was captured by Jessica Deesk, Kanata EMC photographer.
Mikaeel went on to successfully break his wooden board during our
Taekwon-Do Demo #3 of the day, much to his pride and joy. This
success story is a tribute to Mr. Jardine and our Leadership
Excellence Program, whose motto is to "Help Other People Succeed", and a
testament to Mikaeel who followed one of the tenets of Taekwon-Do, which
is "perserverance", or what we teach which is to:
"try, try, try, until you triumph!"

the past 5 years, Councillor Hubley was the very first Kanata resident
on our list? He trained Taekwon-Do with his sons but more importantly,
immediately showed his support when we opened the doors to our full-time
academy. This is a testament to his genuine dedication to our
community. Thank you Councillor!
December 19, 2010 - Fam Jam 2010 Showcases Taekwon-Do Families Spirit
and Achievements
.jpg) On
this beautiful winter evening, the
spirit was at all-time high as we celebrated
our success and achievements of the past
year at our annual Black Belt
Excellence Martial Arts Academy
FamJam 2010. What is FamJam? It
is a family jamboree, or gathering of our
Taekwon-Do family members combining an
International Pot Luck Party, Taekwon-Do
Demo, and Awards of Excellence
presentations.

A whopping
200 students and their families representing over 25 countries

over, everyone headed over to our good neighbours at Gabriel's
Restaurant for a fantastic brunch.

watching the top-rated movie Dreamwork's "How To Train Your Dragon"

Congratulations to
all of the new Black Belts!
Not only was I happy
for all who passed, but of course I was very pleased that my goal
of International Instructor has been achieved. I was absolutely
truly
overwhelmed
and inspired by the support that everyone showed to Steven and me!
Black Belt Excellence is very much a martial arts family and a place
where support and friendship is always at hand. This simply serves
to inspire me to continue doing my very best to help our students do
their best and to succeed and achieve their goal, just as we did.
Thank you and our students again for the support you have shown us!
This was a life milestone which I will always treasure. - Wayne D.

The Taekwon-Do world welcomes two new 4th Degree
Black Belt International Instructors.
(who completed 300 push-ups and sit-ups during the Physical Test)
/tn_Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(132).jpg) I
have learned plenty of leadership skills so I can help others achieve
their goals. I have also learned to be serious at the proper times
and also be fun and joyful the proper times.
Thank you
Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen for teaching me the
correct meaning of leadership, hard work and perseverance. -
Eric P.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(000).jpg)
Black Belt testing candidates pumped
about the journey ahead.
I
found the push-ups difficult, but the practicing every week has given me
the mental and physical strength to do my push-ups. Taekwon-Do
training has given me a better chance of surviving against the world
than others who didn’t join the martial arts. - Adam I.
One
reason why I joined TKD was to get in better shape. I thought "Hey,
maybe I could lose some weight doing this!’’ but I felt like
quitting many times. But then, Mr. Nguyen asked me if I had wanted to
achieve black belt excellence, and that he believed in me. That
motivated me to keep going. - Shufee HS
I
quite enjoy coming to Taekwon-Do after a
hard day and just working off troubles and
stress and bad moods. Taekwon-Do has
become part of my life completely like when
someone asks me the favourite thing I love
to do, usually Taekwon-Do pops to mind
first. - Michael B.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(014).JPG)
250 push-ups and 250 sit-ups and skipping - done!
I think my biggest
obstacle was the first year of Taekwon-Do. I just
wasn’t into it. I
wanted
to be, but I couldn’t. Inside of me I honestly
wanted just to quit. Going to Taekwon-Do twice a
week was like a chore, or an item on the agenda.
Luckily, I stayed. It was the way that the
instructors pushed me above and beyond my limit and
my parents wanting me so badly to take part of this
sport that kept me going, along with sheer
perseverance. I think also, once we began
breaking and learning cool techniques, I began to
grow fond of the sport. And now, I’m glad I stayed
because it all paid off.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(045).JPG)
It's a spectacular fall day and we finished our run.
Life is beautiful.
Over these past few
years, I have become physically, mentally and
spiritually strong. I can now apply myself to
everything I try. My fitness levels have soared.
I never used to participate on any sport; now I’m
open to trying anything. I work out almost
every day and am more athletic. I think I also
gained some friends that I will always love. - Imane
O.
When
I was preparing for the Black Belt test, a thought came to my mind
that it was too hard and that it would be easier to quit. I took
that negative energy and used it as positive energy and use it to my
advantage. My self-confidence has greatly improved over the years in
Taekwon-Do. - Hanna I.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(047).jpg)
BBX aka The House of Discipline.
I
love being around everyone here. Having friends
and hanging around, but still learning how to defend
yourself in case you are attacked. The positive
atmosphere and respectful teachers make this a fun
place to learn. - Cody C.
I love being around
everyone there. Having friends and hanging around, but still learning
how to defend yourself in case you are
ever
attacked. The positive atmosphere and respectful teachers make
this a fun place to learn. I now benefit from better health,
leadership, and I have better self-confidence than I did before and I
don’t give up any more like I used to.
I love the intensity in the class. After a class at BBX, I’m
always exhausted. When I moved to Ontario, I was worried whether we’d
find a dojang for me. When I started at BBX I loved it straight
away. - Ashley C.
I gained courage and
motivation through my Taekwon-Do training. I was at one
point
very close to quitting around green belt, but I learned hat you always
have to keep motivated in anything you do. I feel that I have become a
better person by continuing Taekwon-Do. Whenever a situation occurs,
words like courage, motivation and passion pop into my mind and then
my situation is quickly resolved. This, I most surely say is due to
Taekwon-Do and the help of Black Belt Excellence, with such a
positive atmosphere that lightens up my life.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(131).jpg)
A standing-room only capacity crowd @ BBX supporting
our Black Belt testing candidates.
Personally I felt that as soon as I
started TKD everything started to get to a higher level, but
specifically the ones that I felt benefited the most were my
self-confidence, leadership abilities and my grades. I feel that I
have 1000 times more the confidence and courage within myself compared
to three years ago. My leadership skills have also sky rocketed ever
since I joined the Leadership Excellence Program.
I
now have a better capability of teaching kids while maintaining the
importance of fun. My greatest improvement I found were my grades; I
started to take more time when studying and understanding certain
subjects. In grade eight I set a goal to get an over all of over 90%
average, and throughout the year I studied and understood each
possible concept in my subjects. At the end of the year I received
the Principal's Award, which represents the achievement of gaining a
90% or higher average. I was so proud and I have to say
Taekwon-Do helped me achieve this
by teaching me to strive a better understanding of everything I do. -
Sara Z.
I enjoy almost
everything about Taekwondo training, especially the energy I feel when
I am training. Taekwon-Do always cheers me up after a long day. The
academy
has a feeling of positive energy. I plan on using my black belt
skills and status to help me get jobs, and use my skills to help
myself become more successful, and happy in life. I think these skills
have already changed who I am, and I plan on staying true to the
morals I have learned in Taekwon-Do for the rest of my life.
I have gained many benefits in Taekwon-Do, including leadership,
confidence, strength, knowledge, and friends. It has positively
impacted me and I hope to continue Taekwon-Do for as long as I can. -
Matthew B.
At
Taekwon-Do I have learned perseverance and discipline. I have
not felt like quitting, but Taekwon-Do has helped me overcome
academic issues with perseverance. - Chris C.
I enjoy the friendly atmosphere you
get when you walk into the
dojang.
Everyone is there to train hard but also to have fun and train with
friends. I have learned that anything is possible if you have
the confidence, determination, and focus. I have always had
trouble with my busy schedule and I sometimes let Taekwon-Do
fall through the cracks. But now, I’ve begun to narrow my interests
and focus on things I really enjoy like Taekwon-Do. - Dale M.
My
first exposure to TKD was at age 16. However, I did not start up
again until in 2005 when I was looking for something that allows me to
stay in shape and flexible and at the same time is enjoyable at age 40.
I learned that Taekwon-Do
is a life long journey and that you need to adjust your expectations
during this journey. No goal is too high, just the road to get
there gets longer as you age. - Lt.Col. Stefan K.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(005).JPG)
Pushing himself and doing push-ups to the max!
What attracts most in
martial arts, besides the “cool moves” as my son
calls it, is the character building aspects of it.
In order to practice martial arts, any one of them,
the student needs determination, perseverance,
self-control, indomitable spirit and above all
respect and humility. These are also the building
blocks to build a successful, balanced and rewarding
life.
With
passion, determination, and discipline it is never late to accomplish
a dream. The last five years were the most challenging I had in my
whole life. 2010 was the year I had the biggest loss in my life.
Nevertheless, it is also the year I set up my biggest challenges as
well. I started a Company, am trying to complete a Ph.D. and am
testing for Black Belt. The journey is just at its beginning.
During the first two
years I was the motivator to get my family moving forward with the
trainings. During the last two years I counted on them to keep me
going. The trainings kept our family together, supporting each
other towards a clear common goal. It was the catalyst and the central
point of our family that bonded us forever. The worse is behind us
and I see a wonderful time ahead.
A family
that kicks together sticks together! It is truthful and powerful.
- Julio P.
I
have learned to push myself physically beyond what I thought I was
capable of. Being a modern day warrior demands that you manage your
time and priorities effectively to succeed. - Rubina L.
During more of
4 years of Taekwon-Do training, I have learned that respect,
discipline, perseverance and self-control are essential values that
shall be included in our lives as a proper way to achieve life
balance and success. Also, I have learned that everyone can achieve
the top of his mountain. However this is only possible with hard
work, discipline and determination. - Sandra P.

Ringing our new BBX Captain's Bell after completing
your run.
I like the way you
can be with your friends, but at the same time, the
class is still very disciplined. I really like
the intensity, and how I really have to work hard
and do my best. Taekwon-Do
training has helped improved my health, because I
would never really do sports before TKD, and now I
love sports. It just showed me that I can do well in
something if I try. Being in the leadership team has
helped me in Taekwon-Do and in life, in many
different ways. - Ziyad Z.
/Ultimate_Black_Belt_Test%20(152).jpg)
An astounding 4-board break.
Among
the
most valuable things I’ve learned are leadership
skills, work experience, and how to be more
reliable, dependable and hard-working. I have
learned how to perform under pressure. I’ve
learned to better balance school and Taekwon-Do.
I have also built up my fitness to achieve the
requirements of the Black Belt Test. I have also
improved my discipline and my focus. - James P.
The class
are designed to adapted to everyone training level and for myself it
gives
me the drive to get to that next belt level and train a the world
championship level. The only obstacle I have on my way to 2nd
degree black belt was balancing working night shift for Purolator,
leadership and my own Taekwon-Do
training, but I love it so much I fit it all in. Overall it has
helped me become a leader in my everyday life. When I was a kid I
was shy and picked on up until I started doing martial arts. Now today
I feel great and I think all my brothers and sister of Taekwon-do can
say I’m not a shy one but I’m the fun one. - Cory S.

Kickin' it hard-cord style.
My day at school
mostly consists of sitting, I like getting physical
activity at the end of the day. It's interesting
because it feels like I get more energy from
Taekwon-Do; by the end of class I'm totally charged
and feel much better. I never liked
going to Taekwon-Do, just like getting out of bed in
the morning, I never wanted to do it because I was
comfortable where I was, but once I got there I was
definitely glad I did. Then once class is over, I
often don't want to go home. It was definitely
great to have my dad there to say "Steven it's time
to go to Taekwon-Do".

I am much more
physically fit from Taekwon-Do, but my favourite benefit is the
great feeling working hard and having fun with my Taekwon-Do friends.

Defying gravity with multiple aerial triple breaks.
Taekwon-Do
has benefited me by helping keep fit and young,
providing a good memory workout and has improved my
confidence. It has also given me the opportunity to
do something with my son Steven and in the past with
my other son Eric and my wife Nelly.

August 3,
2010 - Taekwon-Do Program at Roger Saint-Denis
It's
been a busy summer so far at Black Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy located
in Kanata as we just wrapped up a most fantastic and enjoyable
Taekwon-Do Summer Program at a local school Ecole Roger Saint-Denis.
To enrich their summer campers experience, Roger Saint-Denis invited us
to run a weekly Taekwon-Do program to teach the children the basic life
skills, physical conditioning, and martial arts skills of our popular
program, run in French, as Mr. Phil Nguyen is fluently bilingual.
At times, it's felt like a travelling Taekwon-Do road show.
The summer campers even got a treat as our Taekwon-Do Black Belt Demo
team showed up during week four to perform a team pattern and kicking
demonstration for the wide-eyed participants.
Félicitations a tous les participants!

Taekwon-Do Summer Campers I - 2010
July 16,
2010 - Veterans Training I - What a Workout!
There's a saying that states: "Up to the age of 30, your body will take
care of you. After the age of 30, your body doesn't care."
On this summer Friday evening, a number of students aged 30 and up from
our Black Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy located in Kanata, showed
they do want to take care of their bodies, as well as minds and spirits
for that matter, and participated in a Veterans' Training special
session. Congratulations and see you next Veterans' Class!
I very much
enjoyed the training session. The
warm-up and the pace of the class were
very intense (this is a good thing, my
body and I need that), the exercises
were well balanced (some core/basic
movements and technique, some patterns,
some sparring), and I felt energized
and refreshed (intellectually, emotionally
and physically) at the end of class.

BBX Veterans of Taekwon-Do train hard not to prove themselves,
but to improve themselves.
I also enjoyed very
much the Taekwon-Do-family-circle discussion we had; I felt it was
one of those moments which truly bring the Taekwon-Do family
together (it felt very inclusive and intimate), and sharing with
each other; such meetings of like-minded people are few and
far between, and it was refreshing and a privilege to be part of
one.
Overall, I was very satisfied by the workout, I felt
great afterwards, and I also felt that this helped bring the
adult-student community that much closer together, and gave us
something to share together.
- Paul T.

Great job Yacine, Cory, Ziyad, and Kevin - you showed our BBX

This WKA Canadian Tournament
Circuit event attracted over 400 competitors from 100 martial arts
schools and included various martial arts disciplines such as
grappling, jiu-jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai, Karate, Kickboxing, under the
same roof and BBX represented with Taekwon-Do.
"I
sparred
one match right after the other. I was tired, but as you have taught
us "When the
body is tired, let the mind take over, and when the mind is tired, then
let your spirit take over."
And I have a very strong spirit of Taekwon-Do.
Thank you for everything you taught me." - Cory S.

2010 - Martial Arts Family Fun Day a Heck of a Day!
What do you get when a bunch of passionate and dedicated martial arts
families do a Taekwon-Do Demo, then go see a martial arts movie, and
then cap it all off with a Family Team Dinner? A heck of an awesome
Martial Arts Family Fun Day, that's what!
.JPG)
BBX Family Demo Team and XDT whooping it up and getting
supercharged for the day
On Saturday, June 19, the day before Father's Day, our Black Belt
Excellence Martial Arts Academy Taekwon-Do family performed a Taekwon-Do
Demo at WOMFEST, saw the #1 Movie in Canada, "The Karate Kid", and then
went to Jack Astor's Bar and Grill in Kanata to celebrate. All in all,
approximately 100 students and their families participated in either 1,
2, or all 3 events.
"Despite the weather, I thought it was a great teambuilding
exercise for those who participated. In fact, the rain
probably added to the camaraderie of the day." - Bob J.
.jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg)
A Legendary Wet and Wild Demo @ WOM
We kicked off the day with a 50-person strong Taekwon-Do Demo at WOMFEST (W.O.
Mitchell Elementary School Festival), an annual outdoor festival aimed
at celebrating this fine local school and our community. It featured
free carnival games, bouncy castles, a bicycle parade, draws for prizes,
and our very own BBX TKD Demo Team.
.JPG)
Our day started normally enough with decent weather...until about 10
minutes until show time, one of our students whispered in the
instructor's ear "Sir, there's a 10 minute warning of a major storm
coming our way." Although we tried to abbreviate the demo
accordingly, the forces of nature challenged us with fierce winds and a
torrential downpour of rain.
.jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg) .jpg)
.JPG) .JPG) .JPG)
However, our BBX Taekwon-Do indomitable spirit prevailed and the show
did go on! As 90% of the large crowd dispersed and headed for
shelter, we persevered and performed nonetheless. We cheered each
other on with wild applause and high fives knowing that this day would be
remembered as a most legendary day in our academy's history.
Although soaking wet, it was a most exhilarating experience for all -
congratulations to all demo team members and thank you to all families
who participated.

A Legendary and #1 Movie in Canada
After drying up, we all eagerly headed to Kanata AMC Theatres to see
"The Karate Kid", a remake of the original classic of 1984, this time
starring Jaden Smith and martial arts legend Jackie Chan. Of
course, by then, it was bright and sunny. It was a particular
thrill to have the next generation of our students be exposed to the
morals, values, and benefits of martial arts training on the big screen.
This movie had it all; romance, action, and martial arts drama, we
highly recommend it.
"Every child should learn martial
arts. If they do, they will respect themselves, their
parents, and others. They will respect life, everything.
You don't learn that discipline, that self-respect, you could
be just another wild kid on the streets, a bully. Martial arts
can teach you right from wrong."
- Jackie Chan

Party Time! Excellent!
We
capped off this heck of a martial arts family fun day with a Family Team
Dinner Celebration at Jack Astor's Bar and Grill where they had reserved
a large section of the restaurant and amazingly managed to serve and
feed 60+ people in less then 45 minutes. This allowed us the rest
of the evening to celebrate the school year that was as well as the
awesome day that was.
Another great day at BBX, thanks everyone!

Going to: University of Ottawa, Bachelor
of Science
Over my seven years at Black
Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy I have helped with Summer
Camps, Little Dragons, Ninja Nights, Halloween Parties, Christmas
Parties, and Valentine’s Day Parties, the BBX Taekwon-Do program
at our local Kanata Montessori school, and with the Girl Guides
Self-Defence Program.
I’ve learned to be more patient,
especially with kids from teaching Little Dragons. I have also
learned to be more confident in myself as I worked a lot to
achieve my goal after I joined Taekwon-Do, I don’t give up as
easily anymore. I try, try, try, and try until I succeed and
accomplish my goal. |

also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen for giving me all these
great opportunities to help increase my potential as a martial
artist.
My goals for the future are for me
to become a leader to others that surround me in and out of the
Dojang. My career goal is to one day receive a Ph.D. in
engineering and to become a grand master in ITF Taekwon-Do. |

Name: Ms. Beverly Wong
Rank: 1st Dan Black Belt
Leadership Specialty: Little Dragons
STORM Team
Going to: Ryerson University, Early
Childhood Education
During my years at BBX I have been given many opportunities to
learn new things and work with some very amazing and talented
kids. My contributions were not forced upon me; I did them because
I wanted to help, gain experience and knowledge, and most
importantly because Taekwon-Do is one of the things I love to
do most.
The many hours spent practicing team patterns and breaking boards
taught me perseverance, teamwork, and patience. I would never
have had those experiences and life lessons without this amazing
program.
This journey of Black Belt Excellence has been a tremendous gift!
I will never forget the memories and good times had!
In
life, I think the greatest accomplishment would be to live life
to the fullest and to never let anything slow me down or stop
me from being happy and achieving my dreams.
I feel like my time at TKD has made me become a better person.
Being here has taught me many life values such as never giving up.
I have become a stronger and more confident person through
my years of training. That is all because of the wonderful
atmosphere at BBX and all the experiences that I have had and
shaped me to be who I am. Thank you so much for everything! |

Ready as ever for the physical run.
Some of the most valuable things I have learned are
self-motivation
and self-confidence to strive and reach my goals. There were times
before wear I was too stressed out to go for a class, but I would go
anyways. Sometimes I would feel like quitting, but after the class, I
would always feel better. - Alex H.
Every time I walk into the class, I’m always smiling. I especially
enjoy and laugh at Mr. Nguyen’s jokes. I would like to continue with my physical health
and fitness, and I am happy that I am getting a good workout. -
Alexandra G.
I enjoy the excellent fitness
program and how it combines the elements of self-defense. This is
because most of the time I’m stuck at home so I don’t g et much time to
go outside and exercise every day. Taekwon- Do allows me to keep fit
and at the same time teaches me a variety of different ways to defend
and protect not only myself but others too. It keeps me fit, healthy
and alive! Another aspect of my improvement is
from my grades. Thanks to Taekwon-Do I have found that setting goals
and pushing for better marks has become easier. - Austin D.
The thing I enjoy most at the academy is
being a
Leadership team member and
helping other people have success in their
Taekwon-Do training. The most valuable things I have learned are:
-
have confidence in myself and not be shy.
-
how to protect myself in a situation where I
can get hurt or maybe even die.
-
how to handle nervous situations like tests.
- Caelen C.

Getting serious and focused about the unbelievable day ahead.
My journey has taught me patience in myself
and others, devotion, and dedication. It really is something to put
your full being and heart into something and see the results that come
from it. I have learnt the feelings that come from success and
failure, I have learnt humility and strength.
I feel proud every time I see someone smile
because they have learnt something and pushed themselves to be their
best.

I have benefited from my training at Black
Belt Excellence in many ways:
-
Physical fitness and motivation. I work out
everyday to be healthy and fit.
-
Self-confidence. I was once a very
shy kid that had a hard time making friends but because of Taekwon do
I have opened up and became an outgoing guy. - Andrew W.

A great display of physical conditioning and determination at the run.
The most valuable
thing I’ve learned in this dojang is the ability to manage myself mentally. The procedure and ability to control and calm my
mental self,
both before a board break and before a sparring match, is
most certainly, the most valuable thing I’ve learned in my Taekwon-do
journey because this ability can be applied to anything in life. This
includes moments before an exam, before an important
presentation or speech, or even as a ritual every single morning. This
ability helps me keep a positive attitude, ensuring I tackle everyday
to the best of my ability.
As the result of Taekwon-do, I realized that my
self-confidence has greatly increased over the years. Now, I feel that
I am a better citizen and leader. - Bill L.
I have always enjoyed the family training at
BBX. It has been a pleasure to be able to train with my s on in the same
classes – a great bonding experience! I am impressed that Mr. Nguyen
is a very active instructor, passionate about the art, the students
and their development inside and outside of the Dojang. Also, the focus on different elements of TKD to ensure well-rounded
development of mind body and spirit has been enjoyable. The evolution
of training methods and techniques is very important in any martial
art and is very evident at BBX. And having fun matters too –
especially for the younger generation, but us older students also
enjoy a good game of dodge ball!
Life balance has always been a very difficult
obstacle in my training and journey to
Black
Belt. With a young family of 2 children, and a sometimes very
demanding job, it has sometimes been difficult to train on a regular
basis. I have taken time away from TKD for short periods of time
to focus on these different areas as life priorities shift, but
have always found a way to return to serious training and make
progress in TKD because of my determination to succeed and belief in
the benefits of training for both myself and Ian. - Eric D.

A tremendous show of support by a standing room capacity crowd @ BBX.
Training with my dad
got me excited more because he could help me with some of the
techniques we would be doing and maybe there was a bit of competition.
When
I was younger, I felt like Black Belt was so far away, and would take
a long time to get, but I realized that, like all things, requires
work to achieve.
Through
training Taekwon-Do, I have become more
respectful of others, more patient, and have learned the tenets of Taekwon-Do to become a better person. Also through Taekwon-Do,
I am now stronger, physically and mentally. I find Taekwon-Do is great and
makes people better, and training in Taekwon-Do has generally improved
me. - Ian D.
I like how I’m able to do something I enjoy doing
(Taekwon-Do) with all my friends.
After spending a day at school I can
be happy knowing “Yay! I have Taekwon-Do tonight!” I believe I have gained a lot of leadership
abilities and skills since I have joined the Leadership Excellence program. I
have also improved my self-confidence a lot. Now I’m not that nervous
about helping other students or helping to lead a class then when I
started. - Julien H.
The training at our
academy is conducted with a scientific
approach and in a great atmosphere..jpg)
-
Training: Looks
easy yet so demanding.
-
Approach: Pragmatic and calibrated to the
abilities
-
Atmosphere: Feels convivial yet so serious.
9 patterns and 258 movements later I find that
the most valuable thing I have learned is a better understanding,
greater patience and a humbler acceptance of issues around and in our
lives. Looking forward to reaching an even greater peace through the
symbolism of the 24 patterns and the meaning and purpose of the 1009
movements they indulge us with.
At my age, the biggest obstacle was a body that
did not always properly execute the orders of the brains, hence great
deal of frustration, yet with perseverance comes that unmatched
feeling that self-improvement gives; this is what has fuelled the
desire to continue all the way.
.JPG) .JPG)
Almost four years ago both my physical health and
fitness were rather on the mediocre side of the spectrum, today I am
very thankful to Taekwondo, it did not only rejuvenate me, but it
invigorated my fitness and improved my health a great deal.
Taekwon-Do has served me. I will continue to train in order to
achieve International Instructor status and serve Taekwon-Do.
Taekwon-Do training made me know and experience
the fact that it is always possible to push the limits of abilities
farther out. Using that spirit of endeavor and perseverance in other
fields of my life has made me achieve better work performance, higher
level of peace of mind and a deeper spiritual comfort. - Kamel D.
Training at BBX is definitely fun. I value
our friendly instructors as well as our top-notch equipment. I enjoy
training here because I often train with my friends
and oftentimes, I
come home sweating and eager to improve my body's physical capacity. I believe that Tae-kwon do has greatly improved
my self-confidence, self-control, humility, and my integrity. I
believe that Taekwo n-Do has had a profound effect on my ability to
work under stress; homework and other tasks do not seem like an
impending doom upon me, but they merely seem like just another task
that needs finishing. Furthermore, being on the leadership team has
greatly improved my skills as a leader. Finally, Taekwon-Do training
has greatly helped me improve my physical fitness and in turn, it has
helped me adopt a better lifestyle. - Kevin L
Aside from the great location, wonderful
instructors, and the physical fitness benefits, I enjoy training with
my two boys the most. I originally started for them so that I can
help them with their training. Now they help me!

Getting into the spirit of things with a legendary "Taekwon-toe!"
I am proud that I have been able to get myself
back in to shape! For about ten years, while the children were young,
I really didn’t do much exercising. I am workin g hard and truly feel
that I’m in the best possible shape that I can be in (for my age). I
enjoy working out so much that I joined a gym to supplement my
Taekwon-Do training and now exercise 7 days a week. Exercising
regularly takes a big chunk out of my day but I have learned that in
order to properly take care of my family, I must take care of myself.
I have way more energy than I used to and have reduced my stress
levels tremendously. I’m healthy, happy and strong!
Definitely, the proudest moments are when my
children receive their new belts. I have to fight back the tears
every time. No one can imagine the challenges we face and how far
we’ve come. I am extremely proud of my two boys. I am healthier and happier! - Kirsten J.
What
do I enjoy most about training at our academy? I would simply
say "Everything." I enjoy everyone at the Dojang, all instructors, all
students, the atmosphere and the Dojang itself. Training is physically
demanding but still very fun at the same time.
I would like to thank both Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen
for
giving me all these opportunities to excel.
My main goal is to be a "good" black belt. An
example is a skilled martial artist that is well rounded in all
aspects of Martial Arts. I also want to be noticed as a Martial artist
when I am not wearing the uniform. I want to one day have full
confidence and ability to teach other students and be a leader in and
out of the Dojang.
Taekwon-Do has helped me a lot with everyday life
skills as well as better focus. It has given me the extra edge to be
able to go one step further than others, I can work for longer hours
now in school and training. - Moe D.

Black Belts bring it on with a Team Pattern.
I have learnt lots about Taekwon-Do. I have
learned that Taekwon-Do is not only kicking and punching but a way of
life. I learnt perseverance and how not to look at where you are but
at the end result. Improved self confidence, physical strength, and
enhanced health and fitness. - Rishi S.
I started Taekwon-Do here in September 2005
because back then before I started, I
believed in “super heroes with super
powers”. So, Mom put us in Taekwon-Do and told me that this will give me super powers.
Well, she probably said that just to encourage me to start training in
Taekwon-Do. She says that she always wanted us to know what to do in
case there are villains that may be out and about! Now, 4 ½ years
later, I realize that there are no such things as super heroes,
but there are such things as super Black Belts! - Ryan M.
Training together
with individuals wh o
are determined to give their best each and every class is an endless
source of inspiration and motivation. There is no end to
improvement and no limit to what can be accomplished. I now
aspire to test for my 4th Dan and
become an International Instructor. In addition to general physical fitness, I
benefit from a tremendous increase in physical and mental energy that
allows me to do more every day, and even come up with more create
solutions to difficult problems on the job. - Shawn G.

Mr. Shawn with a record-breaking 5 board smash!
I enjoy being able to train with friends,
exercise and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, learn some self-defense skills for life,
and a strong sense for responsibility and having
fun. I have set goals and I'm determined to see
them through. I believe Taekwondo has benefitted me for life. -
Shirley H.
I
have learned greater r espect for others. Taekwon-Do has also taught me better time management skills
and it has given me the chance to take pride in what I do. My health and fitness has improved greatly
through Taekwon-Do; it gives me a regular dose of exercise. I have
become much more self-confident and my leadership skills have improved
greatly. Overall, Taekwon-Do has been beneficial to all areas of my
life. - Shuying Z.

Emotions run high for Black Belt Excellence graduates.
The most valuable
thing I have learned without a doubt in my opinion
is self-defense. The academy teaches very practical releases that
are straight to the point. Learning the defense over and over again
helps build muscle memory, so if, u nfortunately,
I were caught in a situation, I would know what to do right away.
The main characteristics I see developing are
enhanced health and fitness. I can certainly notice the great
improvement of cardio and strength. Taekwon-Do has made a clear and
evident impact on my physical condition. - Tyler D.

BBX youth group performing a Team Hwa Rang.
I love the friendly vibe as soon as you step in
the academy. Everyone treats fellow students like family. Training is
always exciting. fun, and demanding. I can't get enough of it.
I have many proud
moments in
Taekwon-Do,
becoming a national champion, become an assistant instructor,
receiving my 1st degree, and my whole journey in Taekwon-Do.
Taekwon-Do made me a whole new person. I started
off as a shaggy-haired lazy kid, and now I feel that I'm completely
different in a good way. I am now never shy, confident, and physically
and mentally stronger than ever. Taekwon-Do has now become my life,
and I'm glad that it is. - Yacine D.

Congratulations to the Kanata Minor
Hockey Association's K5 Slammers for their
great season and for choosing Black Belt
Excellence to host their end-of-the-year
hockey party.
To have your hockey, soccer, or other sports team teambuilding
event at our Black Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy located in
Kanata (Ottawa), please contact us at (613) 599-3001.

Congratulations to the Kanata K5 Slammers Hockey Team!
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Nguyen & BBX staff,
Thank you again for such a wonderful
day. My son's hockey team, our family, all parents and siblings
had an AMAZING time at BBX for our Initiation KMHA K5 Slammers End
of the year hockey party!
Your staff was so courteous, helpful,
accommodating and extremely enthusiastic. (They even offered to take
pictures so that all could participate.)
I loved the fact that all ages were
able to enjoy this event, ranging from 3 yrs to, well let's just
say 53 since I am not going to ask anyone their ages =) The students
were welcomed, stretched and trained. I think many adults realized how
much of a workout and how physically challenging Taekwon-Do was, and
it has inspired them to get on board and join the Taekwon-Do training
rather than just watch their children participate. It was also
great fun for the kids to have their parents participate. It is
a wonderful way to connect with your children.
As a teacher, I enjoy hearing you coach
the children on their listening & on respecting others & themselves.
BBX allows us to work together and help our children focus on
improving themselves and their self-discipline. I love that you
incorporate this into your lessons and even team building activities.
Students show an immediate respect
